Sharing the Christmas Spirit with Your Neighbors All Year

It’s nice to spread a little bit of extra cheer to your neighbors during the holiday season, but it is also important to keep up the kindness and goodwill throughout the rest of the year. Why just be nice during Christmastime, when you can be a good neighbour for the other 11 months too? Spreading kindness to your neighbours will make them feel appreciated and cared for and your positive actions will have a ripple effect over your entire community. So, how can you stay in the spirit of Christmas all year and share that feeling with your neighbours? Here are some ideas.

Host Regular Get-Togethers

One of the best parts of the Christmas season is getting together with friends and family to eat, drink and be merry. However, this doesn’t have to only happen around Christmastime. Consider having a few get-togethers throughout the year where you invite your neighbours around for dinner. This could be a great time to touch base with them, see what is new and get to know them. It doesn’t have to be a fancy event, just a barbeque or a potluck is fine - the important thing is spending time together.

Give Spontaneous Gifts

Giving someone a thoughtful gift can really make them feel special - and it doesn’t only have to happen at Christmas. Be on the lookout for nice gifts that you can give your neighbours all throughout the year. The more you get to know them, the more meaningful these gifts can be. For example, you might learn that your neighbor is interested in poetry. If you are at a bookstore and you see a book of poetry that looks interesting, you can pick it up for them. These types of thoughtful gifts really reflect that you have taken the time to get to know them and are aware of what they like.

Lend a Helping Hand

Look for little moments where you can help your neighbor by doing something that makes their life easier. For example, if you are shoveling your driveway and notice that theirs needs shoveling too - take a little time and do it for them. There are many helpful things that you can do, such as giving them a ride to work if their car has broken down or offering to babysit their kids when they have plans. They will really appreciate the help, especially if they are busy and overwhelmed.

Make Homemade Treats

Baking Christmas cookies and giving them to neighbors is a popular tradition during the holiday season. However, if you enjoy baking this is also something you can do all year round to spread joy throughout your neighborhood. During the rest of the year you can make homemade treats whenever you have a chance - such as cookies, muffins, cupcakes and more - and deliver them around to the nearby houses. There doesn’t have to be an occasion, you can simply say, “I’ve been baking and I made way too many, so I thought you might like some!” Your neighbors will love the sweet treats - just make sure to take into account any dietary restrictions they might have. These are just a few of the ways that you can share the Christmas spirit with your neighbors all throughout the year. Christmas is a season of kindness, thoughtfulness, generosity and love - but it doesn’t have to stop after December.
